Professor Spada’s areas of clinical expertise are addictive behaviours, anxiety problems (in particular generalised anxiety and worry, panic attacks, phobias and social anxiety), and depression/rumination. He has also worked extensively in the application of CBT to coaching for occupational functioning, such as achieving better life-work balance, improving cognitive performance, managing work-related stress and tackling performance anxiety.


James Binnie

Experience

James has been involved with the Efficacy team for over six years. In addition to his independent work James is a Senior Cognitive Behavioural Therapist providing assessment and treatment of patients with anxiety, depression, OCD, personality difficulties and PTSD at a Psychological Therapies Service. He is involved in supervising other therapists, service development and training.
Prior to this James worked in secondary care mental health services as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist seeing patients with severe and enduring mental health problems. He has also been a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and Team Leader managing an early intervention service which provided CBT to young people experiencing their first episode of psychosis. This role also involved leading the clinical governance and service development and delivering family interventions and carer support.
James has been a university lecturer at Birkbeck College and actively pursues an academic focus. He has had several peer reviewed articles published and has presented research findings at the BABCP conference and at the Institute of Psychiatry.

Special Interests

James prides himself on being a generalist and has helped people suffering from various problems in terms of severity and complexity. Areas of special interest include the treatment of trauma, early onset psychosis (including bi-polar disorder) and helping people return to work/work related stress.


Marisa Brioni

Experience

Marisa is a CBT therapist with experience of working in busy NHS primary care psychology departments. She has been delivering both individual and group CBT, as well as supervising other therapists. She continues to treat depression and anxiety disorders in the NHS part time. Marisa received training in the first national cohort of IAPT therapists (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies). Before then, she worked in mental health and in research in the community sector.
Marisa is bilingual (English and Italian)

Shamira Graham

Shamira has been with the Efficacy team since 2008. Shamira is responsible for optimising service delivery and service development at Efficacy. This includes developing and implementing the strategic direction for Efficacy, marketing and advertising, and new business development.
She also has an external focus and is responsible for managing relationships with our clients, suppliers and partners.
Shamira comes from a senior management and consultancy background gained in large corporate organisations over 15 years. She has a background in portfolio management, strategic planning and business analysis and improvement.
Shamira has also worked as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Neurology researching Parkinson’s Disease and quality of life, and has published papers (2007, 2008, 2010) in this field.


John Hennessy

Experience

John joined the Efficacy team in 2014. He has over 10 years of experience working in both general/physical, and mental health settings as an Occupational Therapist and CBT therapist in the NHS and private sector. John’s background includes a wide range of experience working with clients in inpatient, and out-patient, and an Early Intervention Mental Health Service in the community.
John has also worked extensively in the field of community paediatric care and currently still holds a role as a private consultant for children and young people in a mainstream school setting. This role involves working closely with the children, teachers, school staff and families, in both a physical and mental health context. John has an exceptional experience of providing holistic psychological interventions covering the life span. Prior to training as a health care professional John was a seasoned professional in international marketing career, bringing a unique perspective to his practice.

Special Interests

John’s particular areas of interest include how anxiety effects people in adulthood (such as OCD, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, panic disorder and social anxiety), and working with clients who are suffering from depression and work-related stress.


Poonam Jetha

Experience

Poonam is an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and completed her specialist training in CBT at University of Surrey, as well as Masters in Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy at University of Derby. In addition to her private work, she has eight years of experience of working in NHS primary and secondary care services, specialising in adult mental health. She continues to work full-time within the NHS for South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust as a CBT therapist, in an IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) service where she provides treatment for depression and anxiety related difficulties, conducting wellbeing workshops and supervising junior members of staff.

Poonam is skilled and experienced in treating a wide range of difficulties which include depression, anxiety, phobias, stress, relationship problems, trauma, sleep problems, anger, bereavement and loss, low self-esteem, lack of confidence and occupational difficulties.


Kasia Juralowicz

Experience

Kasia is a highly skilled and effective CBT psychotherapist and nutritionist with over 10 years’ experience in nutrition and mental health at the NHS. She is experienced in a variety of therapeutic techniques including Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Schema Therapy.
In addition to her role at Efficacy, Kasia works as a NHS psychotherapist in Surrey, where she provides high intensity CBT assessments and treatments as well as clinical supervision and training.
In her role as a Senior Health Promotion Specialist at Southwark NHS she designed and delivered health improvement outreach programmes. She managed weight loss and behaviour change projects including MEND and Live Well. Kasia practised general medicine in Poland before coming to the UK.
Kasia enjoys working with individuals and groups. She is experienced in treating a wide variety of anxiety and mood disorders such as:

Dan Kolubinski

Experience

Dan has been a part of the Efficacy team since August 2011. After qualifying as a psychotherapist, Dan worked in private practice in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, before relocating to the UK. He then spent 2 years as a therapist in an NHS-based primary care mental health team in Surrey.

Special Interests

Dan’s particular areas of interest include mood and anxiety disorders, particularly PTSD and Generalised Anxiety Disorder. He also has a keen interest in interpersonal relationships and works with couples in distress to help mend bridges and strength communication.

Experience

Babalwa has worked at the Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital in Kent since 2010 as a senior psychotherapist providing CBT clinical expertise for anxiety disorders at a national level, which includes support to sufferers of anxiety disorders, as well as working closely with families and other health professionals.
Prior to this Babalwa worked in a large primary care psychological therapies service, where she also supervised trainees. This involved working with people with a wide range of mental health needs, including depression, anxiety disorders and trauma, providing individual and group psychotherapy. Babalwa has also completed a six month placement and received further specialist CBT supervision at the Centre for Anxiety Disorders and Trauma.
She also has many years of experience working as a senior staff nurse in NHS settings across London.

Special Interests

Babalwa’s particular areas of interest include working with people with a range of anxiety disorders (including Generalised Anxiety Disorder, health anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder and OCD), depression, low self-esteem and specific phobia of vomiting.
She was involved in a research trial investigating CBT for depression delivered in brief workshop format across London Boroughs in 2010/11 and was also a member of the Psychology Diversity Forum in a London NHS Trust in 2009.


Collette Sharbel Merven

Experience

Collette’s background is clinical social work in which she has extensive experience. She has worked as a Senior Social Worker in various community and hospital settings, predominately working with adults with mental health problems and physical disabilities. Collette’s role further comprises the provision of clinical supervision to a team of Social Workers. Prior to this, Collette practiced as a Social Worker/Counsellor in South Africa for 4 years before she moved to Berlin, where she assisted in research projects undertaken by the Berlin Psychological Institute.
Before joining Efficacy, Collette worked within a large NHS Staff Counselling Service as a CBT Therapist. Her role there comprised of assessing and treating NHS staff members exhibiting a variety of anxiety disorders, depression, work related stress and issues, self-esteem issues, relationship difficulties and substance misuse issues.

Collette has a keen interest in working with a wide range of anxiety disorders such as Generalised Anxiety Disorder, OCD, Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Disorder and specific phobias. In addition to this, she enjoys working with people with Eating Disorders, Depression, Work related stress, Low self-esteem, Relationship difficulties and Anger issues. Collette places a great emphasis on the quality of therapeutic relationship with clients and believes that this is a key contributor to the overall success of therapy.


Ken McKeown

Experience

Ken has been part of the Efficacy team since 2007. Since 2005 Ken combines his private work with his role as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist at the Neuropsychiatry Outpatient CBT department at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust.

Ken is currently involved in evaluating a CBT programme in the treatment of non-epiletic seizures.


Dympna Mclaughlin

Experience

Dympna has been part of the Efficacy team since 2005. Dympna also works as a CBT therapist and a Team Leader for the Lambeth Drug Rehabilitation Service, this involves management of the service and providing clinical supervision to her team members.
In addition, Dympna provides group CBT for adults with substance misuse problems and individual CBT to clients with anxiety disorders and depression.
Prior to this Dympna has worked as a mental health nurse across London hospitals. These included a role as Senior Substance Misuse Nurse managing patients in the community and in-patient acute assessment units for South London and Maudsley NHS Trust and nursing on an acute in- patient unit in Gordon Hospital.

Dympna’s particular area of expertise is Substance Misuse and Addictions.


Brendan Mcloughlin

Experience

Brendan takes a lead at Commissioning Support for London (part of the NHS) on mental wellbeing, social inclusion and Improving Access to Psychological Therapies. He originally trained as a psychiatric nurse in 1983, and worked in a variety of general and specialist settings.
He qualified as a psychotherapist in 1992, and worked for 10 years at the Institute of Psychiatry and Maudsley Hospital in South East London training health professionals, practising and researching in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
He joined the London Development Centre for Mental Health at its inception in 2002, and has undertaken a number of roles within the organisation, specialising in mental health and employment.

Brendan has an keen interest in anxiety and depression, particularly work related issues and dealing with the psychological aspects of long term physical illnesses.


Mirco Magi

Experience

Mirco moved to London from Italy in 1997. He has been working in the Addiction field, in both Statutory and non Statutory Services, in a variety of roles since 2003. He is currently employed by the Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust, where he delivers individual and group Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to those who are affected by concomitant mood disorders, personality disorders and addiction.
Mirco has experience of providing CBT for depression and anxiety disorders (OCD, PTSD, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Panic Attacks, Social Phobia) and for those who are experiencing difficulties with substances or problematic behaviours (in regards to web-based gaming, gambling, sex, eating). He often works with patients who will have created unhealthy habits in order to self-medicate the negative effects of protracted stress.

Special Interests

Mirco has a special interest in exploring the role of alcohol and substances in maintaining the cycle of depression and anxiety. He is currently developing a therapy plan for those abusing stimulants and New Psychoactive Substances (ketamine, mephedrone, GHB-GBL, spice). Mirco has also a keen interest in working with those affected by OCD, Generalised Anxiety Disorder and Panic.


Subashini Padayachee

Experience

Subashini joined the team in 2015. She has over 20 years of working with adults, children/young people, and families in S.Africa, Australia and now the U.K. She has worked both in the private and public sectors in GP services and at private practices. In Australia she worked as a Psychologist, working with children and families in addressing a range of mental health difficulties. She also worked with adults through an Employment Assistance Programme, the Attorney General’s Office for Victims of Crime. In recent years she has worked in a Post Natal Service in Sydney, offering CBT (both in groups and individually) for mild to severely depressed and anxious mothers.
She currently also works for the NHS, delivering Cognitive Behaviour Therapy services.

Special Interests

Subashini has a strong commitment to treating individuals, so that they can lead healthy lives free of depression and anxiety. She also has a special interest in working with individuals suffering for Social Phobia, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder , Obsessive Compulsive Disorder , Mild, Moderate to Severe Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.


Nick Page

Nick has been part of the Efficacy team for three years. Nick has worked at the Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital in Kent since 2002 as a senior psychotherapist and more recently as the manager. As part of this role Nick provides CBT clinical expertise for anxiety disorders on a national scale, which includes support to sufferers of anxiety disorders and also provides support to other health professionals. Nick also teaches CBT skills to other specialist areas within the Bethlem Royal Hospital Trust. Prior to this he worked as a senior staff nurse in a National Alcohol Unit and in Acute Admissions in NHS hospitals across London.

Special Interests

Nick’s particular areas of interest are Anxiety Disorders, specifically OCD (reflected in his choice of PhD) and Body Dysmorphic Disorder.
Nick was also a committee member of the 1st International Vomit Phobia Summit in 2008. Nick is a specialist in treating obsessive compulsive disorder as well as trauma and body image problems.


Dr Paul Sigel

Experience

Paul is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years experience in the NHS. As Head of Primary Care Psychology for eight of those years, he led the development and management of an IAPT service as well as psychological services for people with long-term physical health problems. Previously, Paul has worked across a full range of mental health services, including primary care, behavioural medicine and in-patient services. During this time, he has practised CBT for common mental health problems as well as problems associated with long-term physical health conditions. He has also taught on several clinical psychology doctoral courses, including Salomons and University College London.

Special Interests

Paul has extensive experience in working with mood and anxiety disorders as well as the behavioural/ psychological aspects of physical health conditions. These include diabetes, heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome and chronic fatigue. He also works with couples presented with common mental health problems and/ or relationship distress. His research interests include cardiac rehabilitation and GP referral decisions.


Fabio Simiao

Experience

Fabio started working with Efficacy in 2010. He has developed a broad range of expertise from working with people with a variety of chronic physical and mental health conditions for over 18 years in the NHS and other community based services. For five years he was employed as an NHS community case manager to patients with complex long-term conditions under Central London Community Healthcare (CLCH).
Fabio currently works for South London and Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Foundation Trust at a highly specialized service under the Chronic Fatigue Research and Treatment Unit providing innovative CBT focused interventions as part of research projects. He is also involved in a research trial investigating the efficacy of CBT for medically unexplained symptoms such as Fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Non-Cardiac Chest Pain (NCCP), Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS) and some neurological conditions.
From working in endocrine specialist services both at Bart’s and King’s College Hospital, Fabio developed extensive knowledge about the impact of stress and emotional disturbances on the body through hormonal changes compromising psychological wellbeing. Fabio’s interest in CBT developed while undertaking his Advanced Nursing PgDip at King’s College London. Since then he has continued to actively develop his CBT skills, practice and expertise.

Special Interests

Fabio’s areas of interests are depression and anxiety disorders, such as social and performance anxieties, and in particular difficulties occurring alongside other physical health conditions or disabilities. He also has experience in Mindfulness Based CBT and Compassion Focused Therapy.


Kerry Smith

Experience

Kerry is a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society with over 15 years experience of working in NHS primary and secondary care services, specialising in adult mental health. Most recently she managed an NHS Improving Access to Psychological Therapies service providing clinical leadership, specialist consultation and supervision to clinicians, as well as working with clients presenting with complex anxiety disorders and depression.

Special Interests

Kerry’s extensive experience as a generalist clinician has lead her to develop wide-ranging clinical interests, including working with individuals experiencing anxiety disorders, depression, eating disorders, low self-esteem, work-related stress, psycho-sexual issues and adjustment to chronic physical health conditions. She has considerable experience of working with individuals seeking to understand negative cycles of behaviour and use this self-awareness to improve their functioning in relationships. She also has an interest in working with couples experiencing relationship distress helping to change their attitudes and behaviours so that they can function in a fashion more acceptable and satisfying to both.


Trevor Smith

Experience

Trevor Smith has worked in the NHS for over 33 years across London and the outlying areas, in addition to working in other public and private organisations. He has had a relationship with Efficacy for five years and is currently an independent self employed therapist and accredited with the BABCP (British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Therapies). Trevor originally worked in the area of Psychodynamic Therapy, obtaining initial training at the Institute of Group Dynamics (IGA) then running and attending his own experiential group at the London Hospital for a period of three years. He then trained as a Psychiatric Nurse, obtaining two qualifications in mental health nursing, before changing direction to become a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, which he has been doing in one form or another for the last 30 years. He continued his professional development by training at the Maudsley Hospital and Institute of Psychiatry, firstly in Behavioural Psychotherapy (Bsc ENB650) then obtaining a level two certificate in Cognitive Therapy before completing a Pg Dip in Cognitive Therapy as well as completing training at MSC level.
He has a firm background in the clinical field, as well as gaining experience in operational and strategic management at a senior level. He set up and managed a large clinical service in West London and has been instrumental in re-structuring others. He has a strong background in education and training, as well as clinical supervision of health professionals in the practice and development of CBT. He was employed as Course leader for two years at the Institute of Psychiatry (Iop) and at Greenwich Universality for three years, as well as being a visiting honorary lecturer for Kings College London and external examiner for Lancashire University CBT degree course for three years. Trevor spent two years working with the Kent Police Service, as the head of Welfare and Counselling Services, during which he developed his knowledge and expertise in working with and managing trauma reactions, enabling him to complete further work with Police officers, Civilian staff and members of the Armed forces. Following this he spent three years as the CBT Lead/Senior Therapist with a Specialist Psychotherapy Service in Kent. He then obtained a position as Senior Therapist in a Specialist Psychotherapy Service in East London and became the Clinical lead for Perinatal CBT for five years. In the last 18 months he has been employed as a Locum Therapist within the National Services at the Maudesly Hospital, with the Specialist inpatient unit for OCD and since 2014 has been working within the Affective Disorders Service for people with complex mood disorders.

Special Interests

Trevor specialises in working with Mood disorders, but is able to draw on his extensive experience, training and knowledge to work with a range of disorders, regardless of their complexity, including Trauma, Social anxiety, panic disorder, OCD and Psychosexual problems. He is a practitioner of Mindfulness and uses a range of mindfulness techniques within his clinical practice.


Tiina Sormus

Experience

Tiina is an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist with over 13 years experience.
She graduated in psychology and counselling from Roehampton University in 2008 whilst gaining experience at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-Disability, assisting post trauma victims and their families and also working in community counselling services. This included treating depression, anxiety, drug and alcohol recovery and supporting the bereavement process. Prior to joining Efficacy in early 2015, Tiina spent 6 years working at an NHS primary care service in Hertfordshire and has successfully launched and maintained her private practice for the last 3 years.
