Professor Spada joined the Efficacy team in 2011. He is currently appointed Professor of Addictive Behaviours and Mental Health in the School of Applied Sciences at London South Bank University where he is the Head of the Division of Psychology and Deputy Lead of the Centre for Addictive Behaviours Research. He is also a Visiting Researcher at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience King’s College London, a Visiting Professor of Psychology at the Sigmund Freud University Milan/Vienna, a Director of UK SMART Recovery, and a Trustee of GambleAware.
Professor Spada has been working as a CBT practitioner in private practice and for community mental health organisations for over fifteen years. More recently, he has completed training in metacognitive therapy (MCT) and became a registered practitioner in 2015.
Before re-training as a psychologist and CBT practitioner, Professor Spada worked as an investment analyst in the banking sector. The experience gained in this field, in combination with his CBT expertise, has provided valuable support and insight for clients with stressful careers, performance anxiety and life-work balance problems.
Professor Spada is an experienced trainer and researcher in the field of CBT and MCT. He has published over 120 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and has authored three books: Overcoming Problem Drinking, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Problem Drinking: a Practitioner’s Guide and An Introduction to Sensible Drinking. Professor Spada is an international leader in MCT and its novel application to the treatment of addictive behaviours and psychological distress in health conditions (such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Parkinson’s disease).
Professor Spada’s areas of clinical expertise include addictive behaviours, anxiety problems (in particular generalised anxiety and worry, panic attacks, phobias and social anxiety), and depression/rumination. He has also worked extensively in the application of CBT to coaching for occupational functioning, such as achieving better life-work balance, improving cognitive performance, managing work-related stress and tackling performance anxiety.
